Temperance

2022, oil on canvas, 11" x 14"

Temperance River empties into Lake Superior at the southern boundary of Temperance River State Park between the towns of Schroeder and Tofte, Minnesota. The Ojibwa named the river "Kawimbash", meaning "deep hollow river" and in 1864, geographical surveyors gave the river its current name, noticing that the river "ran into water so deep that no sand bar formed at the mouth". The Upper Falls, Hidden Falls, and Lower Cascades traverse river carved gorges thru forests of pine, spruce, cedar and birch on their way to Lake Superior.
