Witch Tree

2020, oil on canvas, 11" x 14"

Exposed to the elements and growing out of rock on tribal land, "Witch Tree", also known to the Ojibwa as "Spirit Little Cedar Tree" stands isolated on the far reaches of Lake Superior's shoreline near Grand Portage, Minnesota. The traditional name, "Manido Gizhigans" has been a spiritual symbol for centuries to Native Americans. The tree is estimated to be at least 400 years old and a French explorer is said to have written about the tree in the 1730s describing it as a mature tree.
