Down to Earth
2024, oil on gessobord, 16" x 20"
U.S. Route 40, also known as the National Road, was built in the 1800s. An idea brought to life by George Washington to connect the East and the West, as it provided a stable route for trade through the Allegheny Mountains of Pennsylvania by farmers and emigrants. The barn was the most critical structure in Colonial times on the Pennsylvania farm and was often superior to the dwelling of the family. Pennsylvania today has one of the largest rural populations in the United States with nearly one-third of the state still being cultivated.
“Agriculture is the most healthful, most useful and most noble employment of man.” George Washington
